Ultimate Stardew Valley Beginners Guide : Master the Game from Day One

If you’re a new or returning player, you’ve come to the right place. This is the Ultimate Stardew Valley Beginners Guide, designed to help you master the early game and thrive in Pelican Town. Whether you’re planting your first parsnips or gearing up for the mines, this Stardew Valley Beginners Guide covers everything you need right up until Ginger Island. Watch on Youtube

1. Best Farm Layout For Beginners.

Before you even start the game! You need to make a massive decision. No, I am not talking about the character creator.. You can change this later in the game, but you cannot change your farm layout. There are eight options and they are all extremely unique! If you’re a returning player looking for a fun challenge try the beach farm out as it prevents you from using sprinklers on most of the farm…

If you’re new, I’d stick to either the Standard farm as it’s the biggest farm with the least obstructions ensuring you have tons of space to grow an empire or pick the forest farm as this farm is the absolute best for hardwood in the game. You’re gonna need plenty of morning hardwood so yeah, pick one of these two farm types if you’re just starting out.

2. Surviving Your First Week..

Okay so you choose the perfect farm, now what? Fortunately you will get 15 Parsnips seeds for free. Clear up some space on your farm using your various dodgy weak tools and then hoe up some soil. Plant the seeds and water these crops. You need to water your crops every single day unless it is raining! So get used to this terribly tedious task and don’t grow too many seeds such that you will have no time to do anything else during the day. Naturally you will have to fill up your watering can in these little ponds around your farm.

Now get your ax, chop down some trees and head into the crafting window! Here is where you will get the lovely opportunity to craft up loads of great things!

You’ll unlock recipes as you play the game, but for now craft up a chest and store your valuables in there!  You’ll notice that every swing of every tool except for the scythe will cost you energy. Energy is going to be your bigger blocker in the end game but it’ll get easier as you find stardrops! More on those later. On the 3rd of summer you will gain access to the spa which you can use to restore your energy, until then you’ll have to eat food to regain energy.

Roam around the valley and find foreagables, these generally don’t sell for much so just use them to top up on your energy. However I would recommend that you save these for the mines!

This is fundamentally a farming simulator, so you’re gonna need more seeds. Pierre is your guy! Here at the general goods store Pierre will sell season specific seeds! Take special note to how long each seed takes to grow, there are only 28 days in a season and if your seeds don’t fully mature in time, they will all die. Make sure you have enough days left before planting some new seeds! Oh yes, of course the TV. Watch the TV everyday to see what kind of luck you will have today, and to see if it might rain tomorrow. There is also a queen of sauce channel that you should watch every single Sunday to learn a new recipe. If you missed any, watch this channel on Wednesdays to catch up on missed recipes.

You will quickly see that your tools are all really bad! This is where Clint comes in. He can upgrade your tools for you, you will need to bring him some gold and some metal bars depending on which quality you’re at. Always keep in mind that Clint will take your tool for two entire days, so keep that in mind when planning your week.

To get Metal bars, dive into the mines for the raw ores and smelt them in a forge that you can only craft after you have found your first piece of copper ore. You’ll also notice that your inventory is tiny!!!

This is a crime that we can fix. Head over to Pierre’s store and buy the first upgrade for only 2000 gold. You can hold off on the 2nd upgrade until you’re making good money. However that first upgrade is kind of crucial, prioritize it.

3. Fishing For Beginners In Stardew Valley.

Fishing! If you have heard about this game, you have heard that the fishing mini game is really hard! It’s not that hard, it will take a couple tries to get the hang of but it’s not that bad. To unlock fishing ensure you check your main on the 2nd day of your playthrough and then head to the beach, Willy will give you a fishing rod! It’s simple, keep the fish in the green bar and catch the fish. If you’re struggling to catch fish, head to Willie’s store and buy the Training fishing rod. This will give you a bigger bar and will cause only weak, easy fish to bite onto your line, this can help you level up your fishing.

Once you’re level 5 fishing, ditch the training rod as your bar will then be the same size. Fishing is a great early game source of money, and you will need to fish for the community center, so don’t avoid it. Practice makes perfect.

Once you reach level two fishing you can buy a Fiberglass fishing rod, this gives you the ability to use bait which you can buy from Willie. Bait will cause fish to bite considerably faster allowing you to make even more money while fishing.

When you reach level 6 fishing you will get the privilege to buy an Iridium Fishing rod! It is 8 thousand gold which is expensive in the early game however it is crucial that you get this as you will be granted the ability to use Fishing Tackle.

These will make fishing much easier, and it is required for those harder to catch fish. Catfish, sturgeons and octopuses are just a few examples of hard to catch fish that are required for the community center… The Trap fishing bobber will drastically reduce the speed that fish lose progress, the other fishing tackle have their purposes, but for hard fish use the trap bobber, you won’t regret it.

Most fish can only be caught in certain weather during certain seasons in specific fishing spots but we will go over those specifics when we get to the community center section.

4. Mines For Beginners.

The mines!!! Yes, this is a farming simulator but you need to head to the mines for resources to grow your empire.

The mines will be unlocked on the fifth day in a brand new playthrough. Only bring your pick ax and some food to the mines, nothing else is required here.

When you first enter the mines, you’ll get a rusty sword for free. Head down the ladder, hit the rocks with your pick ax and slay the slimes. Hitting rocks and slaying enemies will naturally drop loot, however there is also a chance that a ladder will appear.

You will always get a ladder on any floor in the mines so don’t worry about not finding one.  Every five levels there will be an elevator, and this will effectively allow you to save your progress so you don’t have to restart from the beginning on the next day.

Every ten floors you’ll find a chest with a reward, these floors are great since they never have any enemies so they’re basically free progress. Now, you will quickly find that the enemies get tougher and the rocks require more hits to harvest…

While it is true that you can reach the bottom of the mines with these basic tools, let’s rather avoid pain and suffering… For the weapon, head to floor 15 and defeat all of the bugs you find. Leave the mines through the elevator and enter floor 15 again. The floors reset when you leave, so you can farm for resources, however we are not  farming for resources, we want bugs!! After you have defeated 85 bugs you can head to the adventurers guild and claim the Insect head from Gil as a reward. This is a reward for completing a monster eradication goal. The insect head is weak, however it’s a massive upgrade at this stage in the game and it will carry you through the bottom of the mines with ease. Now for your pick ax. The basic pick ax is only really good for the first 40 floors of the mines.

From floor 40 you will need a copper pick ax to destroy rocks with only two hits instead. This will cost you 2000 gold and five copper bars. A steel pick ax will allow you to break rocks in one hit all the way up to floor 80 and will cost you five thousand gold and five iron bars. Then we have the gold pickaxe which will allow you to break all rocks with a single hit all the way to the bottom of the mines naturally excluding ore nodes.

The golden pick ax will cost you ten thousand gold and five gold bars.  Now that you have the weapons and tools to conquer the mines, dive into the mines on most rainy days and when you’re not busy doing other things. You need to collect and horde tons of resources from the mines as you will always need them for crafting! Plus, once you hit floor 100 in the mines you will get your first stardrop! This will increase your maximum energy and will seriously make your entire life easier.. There are six more to find so hang on tight! Naturally you will want to reach floor 120, the absolute lowest depths of these mines! The reward? A key to access more mines! But more on that later….

5. How to Unlock the Community Center

The community center is your first step to progressing and unlocking more features in the game. You might stumble upon the community center as you play, however there is a guaranteed way to get the wheels in motion.

First, wait until the fifth day of spring. Wait until 8am, and head into town using this entrance. Mayor Lewis will show you the current state of the community center. After that cutscene, enter the community center, walk to the left and click on this little scroll. You absolutely need to do this otherwise it will not be unlocked.

Then sleep. When you wake up, the Wizard will send you some mail and invite you over to his tower. It’s over here at the bottom left of the map. After speaking to the wizard, you will not have the ability to read the Junimo Language and the community center is officially unlocked. Click on this little button in your inventory to see which items need to be donated.

You can also hover over items, and if this button pulses then it is required. Always double check before selling items, you do not want to miss something that is season specific. We will go through the community center in detail shortly.

6. Community center vs Joja mart?

Joja Mart or the community center? Which should you pick!!! The truth is that the Joja Mart is considerably easier, you can go the Joja Route by heading to the Joja Mart and buying a membership for 5000 gold. Now you can buy the various rewards that you would normally get through the community center with gold.

The truth is the Joja Route is much easier, the only thing you need to focus on is money making. It’s much easier than tracking the dozens of items you need across all 4 seasons…. However the community center route is much more rewarding, and in my opinion a much funner option. Pick whichever you want to do, but we will judge you for picking the corporate scum!

7. Farm Buildings for beginners.

Robin, the one Married villager we all wish we could Marry. While we cannot romance robin she is still extremely important. She is the town Carpenter, and she is good. You will need to use robin’s services to build all kinds of crucial farm buildings. Such as Silos, Coops, barns and maybe even sheds!  You’re going to need all of these buildings, you will mostly need stone wood and gold to get them built. It takes three in game days for most of these and there are tiers!

After you have made a coop, you will need to upgrade it to a Big coop and then to a Deluxe coop. Upgrading farm buildings has many benefits, first you can fit more animals in upgraded farm buildings. Second, you will be able to purchase a bigger variety of animals and most importantly once you fully upgrade a farm building you will get the benefit of auto feeding! You need to head into a farm building, click on this hopper to grab some hay and drop it onto the feeding bay every single day until you fully upgrade the farm building.

Robin will also upgrade your farm house. This too is incredibly important as each upgrade drastically increases the size of your farm house. The second upgrade will get you a kitchen which you can use to make buffing food, and the last upgrade will give you a basement which you can use to age wine and cheese to drastically increase their sell price. So yeah, Robin is quite important. She is closed on Tuesdays so plan accordingly !

Oh and regarding the Silo. A silo will allow you to harvest and store hay. When you have a silo you can hit Grass with a Scythe to turn it into Hay. Without a silo, hitting grass will be a complete waste as it will disappear into the void, so get a silo before clearing out your entire farm.

8. animals for beginners.

Okay nice, you have a farm building. Now for the farm animals. This is where Marnie comes! Marnie sells almost every animal in the game. Chickens, ducks and rabbits go into coops. You are going to need at least one of each for the community center. If you’re looking to make money with a coop, focus on chickens and turn their eggs into mayonnaise with a mayonnaise machine. If you’re focusing on friendship, get rabbits, more on that later.  Just ensure you have one of each as early as possible in your playthrough.

Then we have the barn. Chickens, sheep, goats and pigs are larger animals, so they need to be in the barn. Again, get one of each of them for the community center. However for money, get pigs. Get as many pigs as you can afford! I know they are 16 thousand gold each which is expensive. Don’t worry, they will easily pay for themselves. Pigs will find truffles around your farm, this means that they are the only animal that absolutely needs to be outside during the day to make you money. So don’t keep them all locked up okay?

Marnie will also sell a couple very important gadgets that you absolutely need for your animals. To get milk you will need to buy a milk pail. To get wool from sheep you will need to buy sheers. Once you have completed the community center you can buy an auto grabber from Marnie to magically automatically grab all animal products for you. You will not need to pick up eggs, sheer sheep or milk cows anymore.

Unfortunately you will still need to manually pick up truffles on your farm, but this is actually good and you will see why during the profession section.

Marnie also sells a heater, you’re going to need to buy a heater for each of your farm buildings when Winter hits. They might hate you otherwise…..

9. hardwood For Beginners.

You’re gonna need that HardWood, and a lot of the stuff… If you didn’t pick the Forest farm then the secret woods if your hardwood friend. All you need is a Steel  Ax. This will allow you to chop down this log right over here. This is the secret woods! Every single day you will find six hardwood stumps here. You’re going to need at least 200 hardwood to unlock ginger island and fully upgrade your house, and  you can easily get 12 every single day here. That’s only seventeen days. Nothing to it! Just quick, you can fish in this little pond for this strange decoration thing that you can use in your house.

10. Traveling merchant.

The Travelling merchant is this cute little store that only shows up on Fridays and Sundays. It is kind of important that you visit this store quite often in the early game. This is because they sell purple cabbage and rare seeds. You will need a purple cabbage for the community center and this will be the only way to get this….

Purple cabbage seeds can only be purchased in the 2nd year, so if your goal is to finish the community center in your first year visit the travelling merchant often!! Then we have the Rare seed. This can only be grown in Fall and takes nearly an entire season!!! Grow this rare seed, harvest a sweet gem Berry and take it straight to this statue in the Secret Woods for another guaranteed easy stardrop!!! By now, your energy has become much more manageable.

11. Relationships.

Relationships! TLet’s face the facts. Making friends in a video game is easier than making friends in real life. However we’re not just here for companionship, making friends has direct rewards! You’ll get various exclusive cooking recipes from befriending certain villagers. They will also send you random gifts in the mail, and if you have many friends you’ll get loads of random gifts almost every single day.. To make a friend give them something as a gift. They will either hate it, be neutral about it, like it or absolutely love it!! Naturally loved gifts will make them love you quicker. It is important to note that you can only give two gifts per villager per week, so maximize this by prioritizing liked and loved gifts.

Buy a calendar from robin’s store and drop this in your house as soon as possible. This will tell you when it is someone’s birthday. Giving someone a gift on their birthday does not count towards the gift limit and you will get a massive 8 x bonus to friendship! It is also crucial to note that there are huge bonuses for giving high quality items as gifts.

An iridium quality gift gives 50% more friendship when compared to a regular quality gift. It adds up quickly.

Now for romance! Romance is important ja know.. There are eight options, pick whomever you want! Give them gifts until they are eight hearts. Then buy a bouquet from Pierre and give it to your true love to start dating them. Now onto marriage. Once you have ten hearts with this perfect person, head to the beach on a rainy day. Here you will find the mariner. He will sell a mermaid pendant for five thousand gold, this is what you need to propose and get married. It is important to note that you will need to have upgraded your house at least once to get married. Your spouse doesn’t want to live in a shoe box after all.

12. Best Festivals To join in stardew valley.

There are many Festivals in this game throughout the year. I would say attend all of them at least once, have fun with it however there are two festivals that are crucial to your success! First we have the annual Egg hunt on the 13th of spring.

You need to attend this festival for the sole reason of buying strawberry seeds. You see, Pierre only sells strawberry seeds at this festival and might just be the best crop in spring. So ensure you have saved up some money and that you buy some strawberry seeds on your first visit to this festival.  The next festival is even more important…

The annual stardew valley fair that is held on the 16th of fall. Here you will need to bring 9 of your best items, the Mayor will Judge your display and give you some star tokens.

There is an easy way to always win at this. Bring one animal product, one artisan item, one cooked meal, one fish, one foreatable, one fruit, one mineral and one vegetable. Ensure you bring the highest quality and sell price items. You do not need a perfect display, as long as you fill each of these item types you will succeed every single time. It’s easy.

Now for the real reward, take your star tokens and bet half of them on green. Keep betting half of your tokens until you have 2000 tokens. Green has a higher chance to land, so just have faith. Then head to this store here and buy another stardrop!! That’s your third stardrop, easy and making your entire life just considerably easier for the rest of the playthrough.

13. Skull Cavern Tips & Tricks.

The skull cavern is crucial to your playthrough!! This is the most reliable place in the entire game to get iridium ore! The most valuable resource in the game, except for prismatic shards of course. To unlock the skull cavern, complete the vault bundle and get the skull key on floor 120 in the mines. Pay pam 500 gold and get a ride on the bus to the desert and then just head on over to the skull cavern. The skull cavern is not like the mines, there are no elevators that save your progress, you will have to start from floor one every single time. It is also considerably more dangerous than the regular mines as there are these serpents that will fly at you at incredible speeds, and Mummies that can only be defeated with a bomb…

The skull cavern is not for the faint of heart, however it is still the most important place in the game. You need iridium ore, iridium ore is found at the depths of the skull cavern. Bring your best weapon, ensure your pick axe is upgraded as high as it can go, bring food and bombs and fight for your life. Iridium ore is the key resource to upgrade your tools to iridium quality, to repair the boat, to craft crystalariums and iridium sprinklers.. These are all the keys to success. Check out my ultimate skull cavern guide in the description to ensure that you absolutely crush and swim in iridium ore.

14. Best Professions For New Players.

Professions are of the utmost importance in Stardew valley. Every skill can have two level five options and a total of four level 10 options. Professions will make or break your playthrough, however do not fear if you believe you made a bad decision. You can change any profession once you have unlocked access to the sewer. Just visit  this statue and pay ten thousand gold to reset your professions for a specific skill. This can only be done once you are level ten in that skill. Make use of this!! Good professions are worth much more than just ten thousand gold. I will quickly go over the best options for this video, for a full breakdown check out my dedicated professions video in the description below.

For farming, pick the Tiller profession to increase the sale price of crops and then the Artisan profession to increase the sale price of artisan goods by 40%. This is absolutely unmatched, this is what will make you rich in this game… Mining isn’t as obvious, however I would recommend that you pick the Miner profession for bonus ore per vein and the Prospector profession to find more coal. You will always need coal throughout your entire playthrough.

Fortunately foraging is easy. Pick the Gatherer profession to get a chance to get a double harvest and the Botanist profession to force all forageables to always be iridium quality. This works on Truffles as well, so abuse this profession for maximum profits. Fishing is also easy! At level five choose the Fisher profession and at level ten the Angler profession. This will simply just increase the sale price of all fish. Fishing is an excellent source of early game money, this just makes it even better.

15. Mini Community center Guide.

The Community center!! The pinnacle of progress in this game! This will be a very rapid quick community center guide as there is a lot to it… Check out my full community center guide in the description below. Each room in the community center has a bundle with a big list of items that you need to donate to complete the bundle.

Completing a bundle will give you a great big reward! Completing the pantry for example will fix the greenhouse for you! If you followed all of the advice from this video so far, you should be on track to complete the community center in your first year. Make sure that you grow one of each crop and donate them as soon as you have them.

The same is true for forageables, donate them as soon as you have them so you don’t miss any. For fish, track which fish you need and check on the wiki about where to catch them and during what weather conditions. There is a quality crops bundle that you need to complete as well requiring three bundles of five specific gold quality crops. To make this one easy, grow melons and corn in summer and pumpkins in fall. It’s quite easy actually! Regarding animals, as long as you have one of each and if you pet and feed them every day you’ll have no difficulties getting all the animal products, rabbits feet and truffles you may need to complete the various bundles.

The most annoying item in the entire game to get is the red cabbage. It’s horrible!!! So ensure that you check the merchant twice a week and just hope for the best. The vault bundle is the easiest if you plan correctly! You just need 42500 gold and there we go, you’re done! The reward? The bus will be fixed allowing you to get access to the desert. Isn’t that incredible.

16. Early Game Money Making Tips.

Now let’s go through some early game money making techniques to make sure you get that vault fixed up early. Making money in the early game can be tough, but very easy if you focus on the correct things.

The mines will not make you rich, however they will give you the ability to craft up tons of sprinklers which you can use to drastically increase the amount of crops that you can grow at a time. Dive into the mines often and prioritize resources over getting deeper so that you can craft up those sprinklers.

Then, grow high value crops over regrowing crops. Melons and pumpkins are your friend here, grow them and drop them into Preserve jars or kegs to make artisan goods. The key to riches is artisan goods. Having five hundred blueberries is great, until you have to try and age them all.. It’s not feasible, fewer higher value crops will win this war.  You can also make a pretty penny with fishing.

Catch loads of large mouth bass in spring in front of the mines, catch loads of sturgeons during summer in front of  the mines. Generally always just fish in front of the mines for money… Then do not sell any of your fish until you are at least level five fishing.. Only sell your fish
once you have that profession that increases their sell price dramatically.. It’s worth the wait.

Turn all of your random animal products into their artisan version. Make mayonnaise, cheese and cloth… The artisan versions always sell for more, even without the artisan profession. Naturally get a pig as early as possible.. The earlier you have a pig in your playthrough, the earlier it can start paying for itself. Truffles are no joke, they will make you rich in no time. This is just a rough overview of how to make money in stardew valley, so check out my full dedicated money making guide in the description.

17. Beginner Tips for Stardew Valley.

  • Try to always bring a hoe with you, if you see these artifact spots hoe them for clay and random artifacts. You need to donate 60 items to the museum to unlock the sewer. You need the sewer, trust me.
  • Grow many oak trees early in a nice row somewhere on your farm. Then craft up some tappers and drop them onto these trees. You will need tons of oak resin to craft kegs. Oak resin is your major blocker!! Start hoarding the stuff early.
  • Fix the bridge early, it only costs 300 wood. You can forage for coral and sea urchins on this part of the beach. This will allow you to level up your foraging skill quicker and you can sell the stuff for some extra gold.
  • Make sure to craft and use scarecrows! Without them, crows will steal your crops. Scarecrows are cheap and effective.
  • The trees outside of your farm regrow, so chop them down for wood and visit them again in a week to get some more easy wood. You’re going to need loads of wood throughout your playthrough.
  • Craft lightning rods and drop them before summer. When lightning strikes a rod, you will get a battery pack. You have no use for these in the super early game, but you will need plenty of these soon. Start hoarding them. Craft at least five lightning rods, if not more.
  • Never sell any tree seeds. I would also recommend against using them to make Field Snacks. Yeah, the free energy is great however these tree seeds have an awesome late game use, so save them. Either plant the trees, or save the seeds. You’ll thank me later.
  • Craft up an extra chest and leave it in front of the mines for easy deposits. I also tend to drop Furnaces here so I can constantly turn copper ore into bars during my runs. Just hop out every five levels and fill up those furnaces.
And that’s how you get the strongest possible start in Stardew Valley without wasting your time, your crops, or your sanity. There’s so much more to cover, from festivals to marriage candidates and the late-game grind. So if you found this helpful, be sure to drop a like and consider subscribing for more deep-dive guides like this. Good luck out there, farmer and may your mornings always be hardwood rich.
