Which farm is best for a beginner?
The Standard Farm is my default recommendation if you want plenty of room and a straightforward first save. Choose Forest if you prefer foraging and renewable hardwood, or Meadowlands if you want to start with a coop and two chickens. Pick around what you enjoy; there is no single best farm for everyone.
Can I change my farm type after starting?
There is no built-in option to switch an existing save to a different farm map. You can rearrange much of your farm, but changing from Riverland to Standard is a different operation. Mods or save editing are separate, unsupported routes; for an ordinary unmodded playthrough, choose the map when creating the save.
What should I focus on in my first spring?
Start with a small crop patch you can comfortably water, make a chest, and keep enough time for fishing, gathering, and exploring. Begin checking Community Center requirements once it opens. My recommendation is to build a manageable routine before expanding the farm; you do not need a perfect first season to have a good save.
What happens if I pass out at 2am? Do I lose items?
Passing out because it is 2am is different from being knocked out at zero health. Time-related collapse does not cause the same inventory loss as combat defeat, but can cost money and reduce next-day energy recovery. Outside your farmhouse or cabin, the usual fee is up to 1,000g; Ginger Island has a higher 2,500g cap.
Where do I upgrade my backpack, and is it worth buying early?
Buy backpack upgrades from the display at Pierre’s shop. The first costs 2,000g and expands your inventory from 12 to 24 slots; the second costs 10,000g and raises it to 36. I would prioritize the first upgrade when inventory space is repeatedly cutting short your fishing or mining trips, while keeping money for essential seeds.
When should I upgrade my watering can without missing a day?
Check tomorrow’s weather. If rain is forecast, water today’s outdoor crops before giving the can to Clint. Rain handles the next day, and you can collect the upgraded can the following day and water again. Check shop closures first. Rain does not water greenhouse crops, so arrange another watering method for those.
Community Center
Why has the Community Center not unlocked?
From Spring 5 onward, enter Pelican Town from the Bus Stop between 8am and 1pm on a non-rainy day. A different entrance or time will not trigger the introduction. Afterward, inspect the unusual scroll inside and follow the Wizard’s invitation. In multiplayer, the host needs to trigger the opening scene.
Have I ruined the Community Center if I missed a seasonal item?
No. Community Center bundles do not have a year-one completion deadline. You can wait for the item’s season to return, and some missing items may appear at the Traveling Cart. Check the exact bundle before buying a substitute: item type, quantity, and quality still matter. Year-one completion is an optional challenge.
Crops & your farm
Why did my crops die when the season changed?
Outdoor crops wither when the new season is outside their growing seasons. Corn can survive the change from summer to fall, for example, but a summer-only crop cannot. Check the seed packet before planting near day 28, and remember that the planting day is not included in the stated growth time.
Will crops die if I forget to water them?
Ordinary crops do not die simply because you skip watering. Their growth pauses, which can still cost you a harvest if the season ends before they mature. Watering again resumes progress. If a plant has actually withered, investigate the season change or another cause instead of assuming it dried out.
Why are my crops not turning into giant crops?
Only cauliflower, melon, pumpkin, powdermelon, and Qi Fruit can form giant crops. Plant an uninterrupted 3×3 block on the main farm, let it mature, and keep it watered while waiting. Transformation is random, so meeting the conditions does not guarantee a giant crop immediately. Giant crops do not form in the greenhouse or on Ginger Island.
Why did my fruit tree not grow last night?
Check the eight surrounding tiles for growth-blocking objects, paths, or debris while the tree is young. A normal sapling takes 28 clear growing days to mature. Fruit trees do not need watering and can grow in winter. Once mature, nearby paths and objects no longer stop fruit production; greenhouse walls have their own placement exceptions.
What should I plant in the greenhouse first?
Use it for crops you want to keep producing through every season. Ancient Fruit is a strong long-term choice once you have seeds; meanwhile, grow useful repeat-harvest crops or something you still need for progression. The greenhouse removes normal seasonal restrictions, but crops still need watering. Fruit trees can use suitable spaces around the growing area.
Is Ancient Fruit or Starfruit better for making money?
Ancient Fruit suits a low-maintenance weekly harvest after its initial 28-day growth. Starfruit takes 13 days without boosts and must be replanted, but its wine sells for more per bottle. Neither wins every comparison: include seed costs, growth boosts, available kegs, and how often you want to replant before deciding.
How do I get Ancient Seeds and multiply them?
Donate the Ancient Seed artifact to Gunther to receive a plantable seed packet and its crafting recipe. Once you harvest Ancient Fruit, use a Seed Maker to expand your supply. Other eligible crops also have a small chance to produce Ancient Seeds. The artifact and the seed packet are different items, so check which one you have.
Why are my sprinklers not watering crops on the Beach Farm?
Sprinklers do not work on the Beach Farm’s sandy ground. Use the normal-soil patch for automated crops, or plan around hand watering and suitable retaining soil. Also remember that sprinklers water in the morning; placing one later in the day does not immediately water a newly planted field.
Making money
What is a good way to make money early if I am still a beginner?
Fishing is a useful early source of income once you can catch fish consistently, because you do not need to wait for a crop harvest. If fishing is frustrating, practice with the Training Rod while keeping a modest crop patch and selling surplus forage. Keep resources and items you need for progression instead of selling everything.
Should I put a crop in a keg or a preserves jar?
Compare both value and processing time. Ordinary fruit wine sells for three times the fruit’s base price; jelly and pickles use twice the ingredient’s base price plus 50g. Most vegetable juice uses 2.25 times base price. Kegs often suit valuable fruit, while jars can clear cheap, plentiful produce faster. Special products such as pale ale need separate comparisons.
Does gold or iridium fruit make better-quality wine?
No. Fruit quality does not carry over into wine from a keg. Wine starts at normal quality and gains stars through aging in a cask. When keg space is limited, process lower-quality fruit first and compare the sale value of the remaining fruit. High-quality fruit can still be worth processing when you have spare capacity.
Should I choose Rancher or Tiller if I want Artisan later?
Choose Tiller at Farming level 5 to unlock Artisan at level 10. Artisan increases the sale value of eligible artisan goods by 40%, making it a strong default for a farm processing crops and animal products. Rancher leads to different professions. You can change professions later through the Statue of Uncertainty for 10,000g per skill.
Why are my pigs not finding truffles?
Check that the pig is mature, fed, and able to go outside, with usable ground to search. Pigs do not find truffles in winter or during rain. They also do not produce truffles inside the barn. Start with those conditions before blaming friendship or assuming an Auto-Grabber will collect truffles for you.
Fishing & fish ponds
How can I make fishing easier when I cannot keep the fish in the bar?
Try the 25g Training Rod from Willy. At low Fishing levels it gives you a larger bar and restricts catches to easier fish, helping you build experience. Use small controlled presses rather than holding the button continuously. Move to another rod when you want fish, bait, or tackle that the Training Rod cannot support.
How do I attach bait to my fishing rod?
First check the rod: the Bamboo Pole and Training Rod do not take bait. Use a Fiberglass Rod or an iridium-tier rod. On PC, pick up bait in your inventory and right-click the rod; on mobile, drag bait onto it. Controller inputs differ, so use instructions for your platform rather than copying PC controls.
Why can I not catch the fish I need for a bundle?
Check the location, season, weather, and time first, then any special requirements for that fish and whether your rod can catch it. Fishing in the right place is not enough if another condition is wrong. Magic Bait bypasses season, time, and weather restrictions later in the game, but it does not make every location produce every fish.
Can I put legendary fish in fish ponds?
Yes, in version 1.6.9 and later, legendary fish and their extended-family counterparts can live in fish ponds. Each such pond holds one fish, which does not reproduce, and can produce valuable roe. Older guides saying legendary fish cannot be placed in ponds describe earlier versions. Check your game version before applying that advice.
How do I make caviar instead of aged roe?
Use Sturgeon Roe in a Preserves Jar. Other fish roe normally becomes Aged Roe, which is a different item. Keep a sturgeon in a fish pond to obtain its roe, then process it. If you need caviar for the Missing Bundle, ordinary aged roe will not satisfy that slot.
Will emptying a fish pond remove its Golden Animal Cracker?
Yes. The menu’s Empty Pond command resets the pond and permanently removes its Golden Animal Cracker. Catching the fish with a rod does not perform that same reset, so you can preserve the upgrade when restocking the same species. Use the reset only when you intend to clear the pond’s configuration, such as changing species.
Mining & combat
How do I reach floor 100 in Skull Cavern?
Prepare for a descent rather than a fight: arrive early, bring healing food, bombs, and staircases, and skip floors that consume too much time. Favor a lucky day. If you want the Secret Note #10 reward, read that note first. Using more than ten staircases changes Qi’s dialogue, but not the permanent health reward.
Is there an elevator in Skull Cavern?
No. Unmodded Skull Cavern does not save floor progress with an elevator, so you start from the first floor on every visit. Staircases and shafts help you descend faster during a run. The elevator found in the ordinary Mines does not extend to Skull Cavern; videos showing one there are using a mod.
How do I get iridium before I can handle deep Skull Cavern runs?
You can obtain smaller amounts from sources such as Magma Geodes, Omni Geodes, and panning instead of relying entirely on deep combat runs. Later, the Statue of Perfection supplies daily ore after a four-candle Grandpa evaluation. For large quantities, improving your Skull Cavern preparation remains the scalable route.
What should I do with my first Prismatic Shard?
My usual recommendation is to save it for the Galaxy Sword. Once you can reach the desert, hold the shard at the center of the three pillars to exchange it for the sword. That upgrade can make future mining trips easier. Museum donation and other uses can wait for later shards if combat progress is your priority.
Which ring combinations should I use?
Choose around your problem. An Iridium Band is useful for light, item pickup, and damage; add Slime Charmer for slime safety, Burglar’s Ring for monster-drop farming, or Lucky Ring for luck-related activities. After unlocking ring combining, build around those roles. There is no single best combination for every player and every task.
Does daily luck improve the contents of geodes?
No. Daily luck does not improve what you get when a geode is opened. Its contents depend on the save and opening sequence. Luck does affect other activities, including finding geodes while mining, so finding a geode and opening one are different checks. You do not need to save geode-opening trips for lucky days.
Can I get an Auto-Petter without choosing Joja?
Yes. Auto-Petters can appear in Skull Cavern treasure chests, Golden Mystery Boxes, and certain dangerous-Mines drops. Joja provides a purchase route after its development projects are completed, but it is not the only route. Outside that shop route, treat acquisition as random rather than assuming a particular number of runs will guarantee one.
Resources
What is a reliable way to get more hardwood?
Upgrade to a Steel Axe to clear the log into the Secret Woods. Its six stumps regrow daily and provide 12 hardwood in total. Planting mahogany trees gives you another renewable supply. Some farm maps also have regrowing stumps, but do not assume every large stump on every farm will come back.
Why does the old clay-farming pattern not work in 1.6?
Version 1.6 changed the randomization used by familiar clay-farming patterns. Instructions based on the old patterns depend on legacy randomization and should not be presented as universal. For an ordinary current save, dig suitable ground and artifact spots; once Ginger Island is available, its Dig Site clay nodes offer another useful source.
Ginger Island & beyond
How do I unlock Ginger Island?
Complete the Community Center bundles or the Joja development route, then follow Willy’s invitation to the back room of his shop. Repair the boat with 200 Hardwood, five Iridium Bars, and five Battery Packs. After the repair scene, a ticket costs 1,000g. You do not need a particular friendship level with Willy to unlock this route.
Do I need to save 100 Golden Walnuts to enter Qi’s room?
You need to have found 100 Golden Walnuts in total, not to keep 100 unspent. Spending walnuts on island upgrades does not stop you from reaching the unlock requirement. Qi’s Walnut Room is on the western side of Ginger Island and opens access to its special orders, shop, and Perfection Tracker.
What counts toward 100% perfection?
The Perfection Tracker covers shipping, the four travel obelisks, the Gold Clock, monster goals, friendship, skills, Stardrops, cooking, crafting, fish, and Golden Walnuts. It is different from Grandpa’s candle evaluation. In 1.6, Fizz also sells waivers that add percentage points, so distinguish completing every checklist requirement from reaching 100% using waivers.
Does the item-ID naming glitch work on console?
Do not follow PC item-name spawning instructions on console. The wiki records removal of the naming exploit from console versions while retaining it on PC and mobile. Glitches are particularly sensitive to platform and patch, so check both before following a guide; a video demonstrating a trick on one build is not proof it works on another.
