Finding an Auto-Petter in Stardew Valley is one of those moments that makes a Skull Cavern run feel worth it immediately. You can get one without choosing Joja, but there is no honest promise that your next chest will contain it. Here are the real routes, how I prepare for them and what an Auto-Petter actually replaces.
This focused guide expands the relevant section of my original Stardew Valley YouTube video, with updated mechanics for version 1.6. Jump to the part you need below.

The four ways to get an Auto-Petter in Stardew Valley
The reliable purchase route belongs to Joja. The other routes depend on random rewards, so choose the activity that also gives you things you need. A mining run that returns ore, gems and useful loot is still progress even when the Auto-Petter refuses to appear.
| Route | Requirement | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| JojaMart purchase | Finish the Joja development projects | 50,000g each |
| Skull Cavern treasure chest | Reach treasure rooms | About 3.6% per chest |
| Golden Mystery Box | Obtain and open eligible boxes | 0.5% per box |
| Dangerous Mines special drop | Danger In The Deep or Shrine of Challenge | Rare eligible monster reward |
Prepare for treasure rooms instead of fighting every monster
For a targeted search, I use a good-luck day and bring Staircases, healing food, a luck meal and a way home. Arriving early gives you more time, but the important part is reaching more floors instead of treating every room as a mandatory cleanup job.
Jade Crystalariums help supply Staircases through the Desert Trader’s Sunday trade. Skip infested floors and awkward layouts. The point is to generate more opportunities for treasure rooms. Do not spend ten minutes fighting a room you could have left immediately.
Luck can improve how often treasure rooms appear. It does not turn each chest into a guaranteed Auto-Petter. That distinction matters when you are deciding whether another expensive buff is worth using.

A chest chance is not a guarantee
A roughly 3.6% chance per chest still allows a long run of misses. If you open twenty chests, you are not owed an Auto-Petter because the average sounds encouraging. Randomness is allowed to be annoying.
Keep a spare chest at home for mining supplies and stop when the hunt starts consuming materials you need for ordinary progression. My favourite approach is to combine this search with iridium runs: if I find the machine, excellent; if I do not, I still brought something useful back.

Golden Mystery Boxes are a bonus route
Golden Mystery Boxes can contain an Auto-Petter, but the chance is only 0.5%. Take boxes you earn through normal play to Clint and enjoy the possibility. I would not build an entire farm plan around a specific box reward arriving on schedule.
This route is useful for a player who dislikes rushing Skull Cavern. It is also a good reminder that a Community Center save is not locked out of the machine. The route you chose affects shopping access, not whether the item can ever exist on your farm.
Joja offers the predictable purchase
After completing the Joja Community Development Form, JojaMart sells Auto-Petters for 50,000g each. That is the route to choose if predictable access is one of your main reasons for playing Joja.
Do not confuse buying a membership with completing the development projects. The purchase becomes available after the form is finished. If you are already happy with a Community Center save, I would keep playing it and use the reward routes rather than restart purely for this machine.

Place one inside each barn or coop that needs it
An Auto-Petter only works inside a barn or coop. It does not pet every animal across the whole farm from a spot beside your house. Place it where it will not block your normal route through the building.
It handles the daily petting benefit, but manual petting can still improve friendship gain. It also does not feed animals, provide winter heating or collect products. The Auto-Grabber is a separate machine. These items work nicely together because they remove different chores.
Your dog, cat or turtle is a pet rather than a barn or coop animal. An Auto-Petter in the house is not the solution for them.
My recommendation: automate gradually
Give the first machine to the building you find hardest to visit consistently. Keep feeding and heating sorted, then add more automation as you find or buy it. The Dangerous Mines are another possible reward route once their harder mode is unlocked, but there is no need to tackle content you hate just to chase a rare drop.
The Auto-Petter makes a big farm easier to maintain. It does not need to become the one item that stops you enjoying the game until you own it.
